Designed to drive footfall and engagement across six European cities, the vending machine brought a playful and rewarding twist to the in-store shopping experience.
Enhancing the Retail Experience with Smart Vending Machines
The Brief
Dr. Martens wanted to amplify awareness of their new Zebzag range while rewarding engaged customers with exclusive merchandise. The goal was to draw people into store, spark excitement around the new collection, and collect valuable first-party data from customers.
Our Approach
We deployed a custom-branded Smart Vending Machine and a dedicated microsite to support the tour across Dr. Martens flagship stores in Madrid, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Milan, Paris, and Berlin.
The experience was simple and rewarding. Customers who either tried on a pair of Zebzag shoes or made a purchase received a token with a QR code. When scanned, this QR code led them to a fully-branded Dr. Martens microsite, where they submitted their name and email address. After submitting, they received a unique access code.
Guests entered this code into the vending machine and received a free gift. Prizes ranged from branded heel grips and socks to wax and disposable cameras – with one lucky shopper in each city winning a free pair of shoes everyday.
The Fully Branded Vending Machine
The vending machine was wrapped in campaign artwork and matched the visual identity of the new Zebzag range. From the touchscreen UI to the microsite and packaging design, every element was carefully aligned to reinforce the Dr. Martens brand.
Results
The vending machine tour proved a hit with shoppers across Europe. The concept created a buzz around the new range, encouraged in-store interaction, and gave customers a tangible reward for trying on or purchasing Zebzag products.
The activation also served as a lead generation tool, collecting names and email addresses from customers already interested in the new product range – giving Dr. Martens valuable data for future campaigns.
