THE BRIEF

The University of the Arts London (UAL) wanted to host their graduation ceremonies of Summer 2021 virtually due to the pandemic and for the safety of the alumni and guests who will be attending the events. Unfortunately, UAL was not able to hold in-person ceremonies for the class of 2021 due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions at the Royal Festival Hall, uncertainty around travel and the easing of other UK government measures. But UAL still want their ceremony to be just as good as they normally are (or better) so that alumni can still graduate in style. The event needs to be an occasion to remember, accessible from anywhere in the world. There is no limit to the number of guests you can bring along and if you can’t tune in live, you can watch on-demand.

A TRULY HYBRID SOLUTION

The University created a virtual space where many of the traditional elements of the physical ceremony will be there, plus specially created films, guest appearances - including Chancellor Grayson Perry, an interactive photo booth, links to the array of resources available graduates and opportunities to buy UAL merchandise. We integrated our virtual photo booth technology, which allowed the user to submit a photo that could be merged with their friends, so just like at an in-person ceremony, students could experience the ceremony together. To give that sense of the alumni being together on this very special occasion, and so they could share the experience with each other.
